BUIES CREEK, N.C. (AP) — Tyler Hughes scored on a 6-yard run in overtime to lift William & Mary to a thrilling 30-27 victory over Campbell on Saturday. The win capped a wild finish for the Tribe, who trailed 21-13 with just 3:19 left in regulation.
William & Mary answered with a swift 67-yard drive in four plays, finishing with a 2-yard touchdown run by Rashad Raymond with 1:51 remaining. After Hughes’ completion for the 2-point conversion brought the Tribe within 24-21, they successfully recovered the onside kick.
Despite facing two penalties, William & Mary advanced to the Camels’ 16-yard line. Following a delay of game penalty, Keegan Shackford drilled a 38-yard field goal with one second left to tie the game and send it into overtime.
Campbell started overtime with a first down on the 8-yard line but couldn’t reach the end zone, settling instead for a 23-yard field goal by Alex Crabb. The Tribe responded quickly as Hughes began their possession with a 19-yard run and then scored on the very next snap to secure the win.
Hughes had an impressive performance, completing 24 of 36 passes for 263 yards and rushing 21 times for 120 yards. William & Mary improved to 6-4 overall and 5-2 in the Coastal Athletic Association.
For Campbell, JJ Cowan rushed 12 times for 107 yards and scored two short touchdown runs. The Camels’ record fell to 2-8 overall and 2-4 in conference play.
