Lincoln Riley is working to put an end to the rumors swirling about a potential exit from USC following the 2025 season. Speculation about his departure arose earlier this week when ESPN college football analyst Josh Pate hinted that Riley could be on the hot seat or might leave the school, cryptically stating, “Let’s just keep an eye on Lincoln Riley at USC.”
On Friday night, Riley sought to clarify his intentions, emphasizing that he wants to remain in Southern California. “You guys know what I sacrificed to come here. I’m where I need to be,” he said during a press conference after the Trojans’ 38-17 win over Northwestern.
There are several high-profile coaching vacancies across college football, including openings at LSU and Florida, which have fueled the speculation. However, after another victory on Friday, Riley has led No. 20 USC to a 7-2 record, demonstrating strong team performance.
The Trojans’ offense was impressive against Northwestern, with quarterback Jayden Maiava throwing for 299 yards, including one touchdown through the air and another on the ground. Receiver Makai Lemon also had a standout game, racking up 161 yards and two touchdowns.
Defensively, the team made significant improvements, holding Northwestern to just 17 total points and allowing only a field goal in the second half. This marked a notable turnaround after allowing 34 points in each of their previous two losses to Illinois and Notre Dame.
Riley is currently on pace for his best season at USC since his 11-3 record in 2022. The Trojans face upcoming challenges with games against Iowa (6-2) on November 15 and Oregon (7-1) on November 22.
Before joining USC, Riley spent five seasons (2017-2021) as head coach at Oklahoma, where he compiled a 55-10 record. During his tenure with the Sooners, he won four Big 12 titles and made three College Football Playoff appearances.
