Food For People to Hold Emergency Food Distributions at CR and in Hoopa Next Week

Food for People to Hold Emergency Food Distributions on November 13 in Response to SNAP Benefit Delays and Government Shutdown

Food for People, the food bank serving Humboldt County, will hold two emergency food distributions on Thursday, November 13. This effort responds to the continued delay of SNAP (CalFresh) benefits and the impact of the federal government shutdown on furloughed federal workers.

The distributions will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at two locations:

  • The northwest parking lot at the College of the Redwoods campus in Eureka
  • The Hoopa Valley Food Distribution parking lot in Hoopa

The federal government shutdown and the resulting delay in issuing November SNAP (CalFresh) benefits have caused significant hardship and increased food insecurity for thousands of Humboldt County residents. Although the federal government has announced it will issue partial November CalFresh benefits following two court orders, these benefits will not be immediately available. Several administrative steps remain, and households will likely receive only a portion of their usual benefit amounts. The exact timing for when benefits will become accessible remains uncertain.

At the College of the Redwoods distribution site, vehicles will be organized in rows in the northwest section of the main parking lot starting at 11 a.m. Volunteers and Food for People staff will work efficiently to move vehicles to distribution points where food will be loaded directly into vehicles.

The Hoopa Valley Food Distribution location will also operate a drive-thru pick-up, hosted by Hoopa OES, TANF, and The Resource Center.

Both drive-thru food distributions will offer households a mix of non-perishable foods, perishable staples, and fresh produce to help meet immediate needs.

Food for People and their partners ask attendees not to line up early to prevent traffic hazards, allow sufficient room for setup, and help ensure the lines move as quickly as possible. Food will be available to all while supplies last, and the distributions will take place rain or shine.
