Meet the new Jim Carrey: inside Mason Thames’ box office reign

**2025 Belongs to Mason Thames, According to Box Office Numbers**

The 18-year-old actor Mason Thames is making waves in Hollywood, and 2025 is proving to be his breakout year, if box office numbers are anything to go by. Mason first hit the big time with his role opposite Ethan Hawke in the 2022 horror film *The Black Phone*, where he portrayed Finney Blake, a terrified teen tormented by the villain known as The Grabber.

Now, Mason has turned his star power into box office gold. Remarkably, all three of his films released in 2025 have hit number one at the box office—a record previously held by Jim Carrey in 1994 when *Ace Ventura: Pet Detective*, *The Mask*, and *Dumb and Dumber* all topped charts.

### Mason’s 2025 Box Office Hits

In 2025, Mason starred in three major films:

– **How to Train Your Dragon (HTTYD)** — Earning $636 million globally, Mason nabbed the lead role of Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III. Hiccup is a bumbling young Viking who forms a bond with a rare dragon despite his village’s ongoing feud with these creatures. This movie is based on the highly successful DreamWorks animation franchise originally released in 2010.

– **Black Phone 2** — Mason reprised his role as Finney Blake. In this sequel, Finney is tormented by The Grabber from beyond the grave. The film raked in $104 million worldwide.

– **Regretting You** — A romance film adapted from a book by bestselling author Colleen Hoover, known for *It Ends With Us* and *Verity*. Here, Mason plays Miller Adams, a sweet, kind-hearted young man from the wrong side of the tracks and the love interest of the main character, portrayed by Mckenna Grace—who is also Mason’s real-life girlfriend. *Regretting You* brought in $50 million globally.

### On-Set Chemistry and Character Challenges

Reflecting on his experience working with Mckenna Grace, Mason shared with News.com,
*”She’s so wonderful and she’s one of my favorite people on this earth. So the fact I got to do that with her, and now I get to experience all this, it’s really crazy, but it’s all just fun.”*

Mason also revealed how his characters influenced one another during filming, making it challenging to keep them separate.
*”There’s a funny thing about that. With Hiccup, I kind of changed his voice, he had a walk, and he talked faster. I was in that role for about eight months, so when we got to *Black Phone*, I was talking a little bit faster, and the director Scott would sometimes get on his little microphone and say ‘I hear Hiccup, I hear Hiccup.’ And I’m like, ‘Oh, got it, got it,’ so I would slow down and get back into Finney’s character.”*

He continued to express his excitement about playing diverse roles:
*”It’s a lot of fun. Just getting the chance to play all these different characters is my dream. The best part of this job is playing characters so vastly different from each other, especially Finney and Miller. Miller is a sweet, kind, caring dude, and I’m a hopeless romantic at heart. I’ve always loved this type of movie, so I’ve always wanted to do something like that.”*
