Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders were stopped by police from meeting a medical student who alleged she was gang-raped in Durgapur, West Bengal. The incident occurred on Friday evening near a private medical college where the victim, a second-year MBBS student from Odisha, was receiving treatment. She was reportedly attacked in a secluded area close to the hospital premises.
The victim’s father has expressed safety concerns and stated that he plans to take her home.
**Criticism from BJP Leaders**
BJP leader Locket Chatterjee criticized the police presence inside the hospital, alleging a “Talibani rule” under Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s administration. She questioned why the police were allowed inside the hospital while doctors were denied access.
Another BJP MLA, Agnimitra Paul, condemned Banerjee’s advice for girls to stay indoors at night. Paul compared the Chief Minister’s stance and administration to that of the Taliban.
**Legal Proceedings**
Three accused individuals—identified as Sk Riaz Uddin, Sk Firdoush, and Appu—have been arrested and remanded to 10 days’ police custody by a Durgapur court.
Responding to the incident, Mamata Banerjee said, “The girl was studying in a private medical college. How did she come out at night at 12:30? As far as I know, the incident happened in a forest area.”
The case continues to develop as authorities investigate the circumstances surrounding the assault.
