Actor-politician Kamal Haasan is set to visit Karur today to meet the families affected by the tragic stampede at a public meeting addressed by fellow actor-politician Vijay. The catastrophic incident, one of the deadliest political event tragedies in recent Indian history, resulted in the deaths of at least 41 people, including several children.
A senior source from Haasan’s party, Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM), confirmed to NDTV that Kamal Haasan will meet the bereaved families around 2:30 PM. Prior to this, Haasan had dispatched his party office bearers to console the families of the deceased and to visit those injured in the stampede. He has also urged the Tamil Nadu government to ensure adequate compensation to the victims’ families.
### Investigation Updates and Official Actions
As the investigation continues, Vijay—who was at the center of the disaster during his state-wide tour—has yet to visit the grieving families. Police have made progress in the probe, arresting two functionaries of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). Meanwhile, senior leaders Bussy Anand and Nirmal Kumar remain absconding after the Madras High Court denied them anticipatory bail. They face serious charges including attempt to murder, culpable homicide not amounting to murder, and endangering public safety.
In response to the tragedy, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by Inspector General of Police Asra Garg has been constituted to conduct a thorough probe. Additionally, the Madras High Court reprimanded Vijay for leaving the venue immediately after the incident and has imposed a temporary ban on public meetings and rallies on state and national highways until a proper Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) is established.
### Political Fallout and Compensation Announcements
The stampede has triggered a political blame game, with Vijay alleging a conspiracy by the ruling DMK party. The DMK and the State Police have denied these claims, instead accusing Vijay of violating safety protocols and exploiting the event to demonstrate political strength.
The Tamil Nadu government has announced compensation of ₹10 lakh for each victim’s family and ₹1 lakh for the injured. In contrast, Vijay has promised ₹20 lakh for the victims and ₹2 lakh for the injured from his party funds.
As the community mourns this devastating loss, all eyes remain on the ongoing investigations and the efforts to provide support and justice to the victims’ families.
