A tragic stampede at actor-politician Vijay’s rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu, has left 39 people dead and over 100 injured. The incident has prompted the Tamil Nadu government to tighten security around Vijay’s Chennai residence amid concerns of public unrest, according to NDTV sources.
### Mismanagement at the Rally
Reports suggest severe mismanagement by the rally organizers. Basic amenities like drinking water and food were insufficient, leading to many crowd members fainting. Adding to the chaos, Vijay arrived at the venue more than seven hours late. Supporters reportedly violated police guidelines by following the actor’s vehicle closely, contributing further to the disorder.
### Emergency Access Controversy
Even as some attendees collapsed during Vijay’s speech, ambulances were reportedly denied entry to the venue, exacerbating the crisis. After the rally, Vijay left for Trichy airport and flew to Chennai via a private flight.
In response, a TVK party advocate defended their conduct, stating all police guidelines had been adhered to and expressing that the tragedy deeply affected Vijay.
### Official Response
Vijay took to X (formerly Twitter) to express his grief, stating he was “writhing in unbearable, indescribable pain and sorrow.” He extended condolences to the families of the deceased and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin visited hospitals to meet the victims and their families, showing solidarity in the wake of the tragedy.
### Legal Action and Judicial Inquiry
The state government has initiated legal proceedings against TVK’s Karur West district secretary, V.P. Mathiyazhagan, for allegedly violating safety norms at the rally. Additionally, a judicial inquiry led by a retired High Court judge has been ordered to investigate the circumstances leading to the stampede.
Tamil Nadu DGP G. Venkataraman confirmed that permission for the rally was granted from 3 PM to 10 PM, but crowds began gathering as early as 11 AM. He pointed out that attendees suffered from a lack of sufficient food and water under the hot sun, contributing to the chaos.
