A quick-thinking ticket checker is being hailed as a hero after saving the life of a 65-year-old passenger who suffered a heart attack on a long-distance train.
The elderly man, identified as BP Karn, was traveling from Darbhanga to Varanasi aboard the Pawan Express when he suddenly collapsed due to chest pain. In a video of the incident posted on X, the ticket checker (TC) can be seen administering CPR to Karn while his brother was on a call with their family doctor. In the video, Karn’s brother mentions that the train was about to reach Chhapra station.
According to reports, as Karn’s condition deteriorated, his brother quickly reported the emergency through the Railways’ RailMadad portal. Shortly after, ticket checker Savind Kumar arrived at Karn’s coach and began performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) under the guidance of Karn’s family doctor, who was contacted by his brother.
Kumar continued giving CPR for around 15 minutes, successfully reviving Karn. As the train approached Chhapra station, a medical team was waiting to rush Karn to a nearby hospital. Fortunately, the man’s condition is now stable.
For his lifesaving actions, Kumar is expected to be honored with a cash award. Railway authorities have also commended his quick and decisive response, which helped avert a tragedy.
### What is CPR?
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is a life-saving technique used during heart attacks or cardiac arrests. It helps maintain oxygen flow to the brain and stimulates the heart to potentially restore its function. Administering CPR within minutes is often critical to survival.
