Sam Kerr opens up about motherhood for the first time – and reveals what she hopes baby son Jagger does when he grows up

Matildas superstar Sam Kerr has confessed she’s still trying to wrap her head around becoming a mother. The soccer star also revealed the job she hopes her baby boy, Jagger, chooses to pursue in the future.

Kerr and her fiancée, Kristie Mewis, welcomed their first child in May. Since her recent return to the football pitch, Kerr has opened up in a rare interview about the joys and challenges of motherhood.

“I don’t think it’s really set in,” Kerr told the *We Are Chelsea* podcast. “Me and Kristie always laugh, like sometimes he’s laying on the bed and we’re laughing because we’re like, ‘Wait, he’s ours.’

“I always say to her, ‘It’s so weird that that’s the person that we were going to visit when you had your scans and like he’s with us forever now.’ Like, we still haven’t wrapped our heads around it, maybe we never will, but yeah, it seems wild.”

When asked about her favorite thing about being a mum, Kerr shared a heartwarming insight: “I think he’s just at a cool stage now where when I come home he’s so excited to see me. It’s just a nice feeling.”

She went on to compare motherhood to having a pet: “It’s like having a dog times 100. That’s the way I would explain it to people. It’s 100 times harder and it’s 100 times better.

“So like people that love your dog, you love your baby way more, but it’s like, real hard. Like, you can’t just put your baby out in the backyard and be like, ‘Entertain yourself for half an hour.’”

Kerr’s teammate, Erin Cuthbert, has been amazed by the striker’s transformation into a mum. “I’ve not seen that side of her but she just knows exactly what to do,” Cuthbert said. “Previously she’d be like, ‘Uh, babies, what?’ [and] ‘Oh my god, get them away.’ But now she’s just amazing.”

When it comes to whether little Jagger will follow his parents into professional sports, Kerr is relaxed about his future. “I hope he gets into being a scientist or a surgeon, makes heaps of money,” she said with a laugh.

On the football front, last week Kerr made a stunning return for Chelsea, scoring her 100th goal for the English side. It was her first game in 20 months after she suffered a ruptured ACL during a training camp with the Blues in Morocco.

“I’m a goal-scorer, that’s what I love doing,” Kerr reflected. “Those 100 goals represent a lot of hard work, dedication and sacrifices.

“For me, it’s an amazing achievement and something I’ll look back on for the rest of my life.”
