Yankees have ‘legitimate shot’ to acquire Cy Young winner, ex-GM says: ‘They’ve had a lot of discussions’

As the New York Yankees look to strengthen their starting rotation this offseason, former Cy Young winner Sandy Alcantara has emerged as a top potential trade target.

Former general manager Jim Bowden believes the Yankees are an ideal landing spot for the Marlins ace. Speaking on SiriusXM, Bowden said, “I also think Sandy Alcantara of the Marlins has a legitimate shot of getting traded to the New York Yankees. I know they’ve had a lot of discussions; I think if the Yankees decided they would give up Spencer Jones—think of this for a minute—they could sign Kyle Tucker in free agency and then trade Spencer Jones for Alcantara.

“Now you’ve added Kyle Tucker and Sandy Alcantara to the team that won 94 games last year, and that would be a game changer for them.”

While Alcantara impressed during his 2022 Cy Young-winning season, his performance this year has been less dominant. Over 31 starts, he posted an 11-12 record with a 5.36 ERA, a 1.27 WHIP, and 142 strikeouts. The 30-year-old missed the entire 2024 campaign while recovering from Tommy John surgery.

From a financial standpoint, Alcantara presents an affordable option, carrying a salary of $17.6 million in 2026 with a club option for $21 million in 2027.

The Yankees were previously speculated to be in trade talks with the Miami Marlins for Alcantara and right-hander Edward Cabrera around this year’s trade deadline, but the Marlins ultimately decided to retain both pitchers.
