SAN DIEGO (AP) — Jayden Denegal ran for two second-quarter touchdowns, and the San Diego State defense did the rest in a 17-7 victory over Boise State on Saturday night in a Mountain West Conference showdown.
San Diego State (8-2, 5-1) took partial possession of first place with two games remaining and improved to 6-5 all-time against Boise State (6-4, 4-2). Both schools will join a revamped Pacific-12 Conference next season.
Denegal opened the scoring with a 1-yard touchdown run just 1:45 into the second quarter, giving the Aztecs a 7-0 lead. Boise State responded with a methodical 14-play, 75-yard drive, tying the game at 7-all on Dylan Riley’s 9-yard touchdown run.
Denegal answered back with an 8-yard touchdown run with 70 seconds left in the half, putting San Diego State ahead 14-7 at halftime.
In the second half, Gabriel Plascencia provided the only score with a 47-yard field goal at 10:51, securing the Aztecs’ victory.
Running back Lucky Sutton powered much of San Diego State’s offense, finishing with 150 yards on 25 carries. Denegal completed 6 of 10 passes for 17 yards and added 16 yards on five carries. Christian Washington contributed 98 yards on nine rushes.
For Boise State, Max Cutforth threw for 104 yards, completing 12 of 18 passes. Dylan Riley led the rushing attack with 79 yards on 21 carries, while Sire Gaines added 78 yards on 13 attempts.
