Everyone handles extreme grief differently. However, very few people have to face that soul-crushing experience with the eyes of the entire world bearing down on them and cameras capturing every second.
When Turning Point USA (TPUSA) founder and CEO Charlie Kirk was murdered in a politically motivated assassination, the world lost a powerful leader. But for Erica Kirk, the loss was deeply personal — she lost the love of her life, and their two babies lost their adoring father.
Despite the unimaginable pain, Erica has handled herself with grace and dignity, staying strong for her children and for the thousands of young people inspired by the work of TPUSA. She has become a shining beacon of hope and light in a dark and sorrowful time.
Yet, for some anger-fueled leftists, every moment — even tragedy — is just another opportunity to express their heartless cruelty. Everything becomes a chance to score political points, even if it means attacking a young widow forced to mourn under the scrutiny of the entire world.
One such example comes from Rhonda Berlin, a ballet pianist at Mercyhurst University and Choral Director at Penn State Behrend. On the platform X, via the account I Meme Therefore I Am, Berlin publicly mocked Mrs. Kirk for how she is navigating her grief.
In a condescending tone, Berlin addressed Erica directly:
“Hi. This message is for Erika Kirk. Erika, I have an acting note for you, and I want you to know I work in theater. I do a lot of work with college students and community theater actors. One of the things we do is help them act in a more convincing way.”
She then criticized Erica’s expressions of grief:
“I keep seeing clips of you where you’re acting like you’re crying, and you’re doing (sniffs and dabs her eyes) that. People keep saying, ‘but there’s no tears’ (again mocking Mrs. Kirk with exaggerated dabbing), but you’re blotting them away over here.”
Pointing to the inner corner of her eye, Berlin continued, “Your tear ducts are here. When you’re blotting over here (pointing to the outer corner), you should blot over here (pointing again to the inner part) and sniff dramatically. There you go.”
Berlin went on to explain, “That would explain why all that black eye makeup you wear is not running down your face, because (mocking tone) you’re cutting it off right here (back to the inner corner of the eye) where it starts instead of what you’re doing out here.”
She concluded with, “I hope that helps.”
This incident raises serious concerns about the kind of individuals who are permitted to work with and influence young minds. In times of profound loss, respect and empathy should prevail — not mockery and cruelty.
