Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced the launch of the “GST Bachat Utsav” starting September 22, describing it as a next-generation reform aimed at benefiting consumers and boosting economic growth.
The new Goods and Services Tax (GST) rates, effective from Monday, are designed to reduce the cost of daily essentials and encourage consumption-driven growth across the country.
“This reform is not only about reducing prices but about creating new opportunities,” PM Modi stated in his Sunday address to the nation.
**Economic Impact: Broad GST Reforms to Benefit Majority of Goods**
The Prime Minister highlighted that the GST reforms will impact 99% of goods, which will now fall under the 5% tax slab. By simplifying the tax structure to primarily 5% and 18% rates, common goods are expected to become more affordable for the general public.
PM Modi emphasized that these changes will not only lower prices but also foster new avenues for economic growth across various sectors, including industry, agriculture, and services.
**Focus on the Public: Double Benefits for Poor and Neo-Middle Class**
The GST reform has been prioritized for public welfare, the Prime Minister noted. He pointed out that the poor and neo-middle class segments of society stand to gain a double advantage from the tax cuts.
“When the purchasing power of people rises, it benefits every sector—from industry to agriculture to services. This is a reform that will touch every household,” he added.
**Political Response: Congress Raises Other Concerns**
Earlier, the Congress party questioned whether PM Modi would address remarks made by former US President Donald Trump regarding India-Pakistan relations and concerns of H-1B visa holders. However, the Prime Minister’s address remained focused on outlining the benefits of the GST cuts and the government’s roadmap for economic development.
These GST rate cuts were initially announced by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman earlier this month, marking the most significant indirect tax reform since July 2017.

With these reforms, the government aims to make everyday essentials more affordable and stimulate growth across India’s diverse economic sectors, positively impacting millions of households nationwide.
