OpenAI signs $38 billion AWS compute deal

OpenAI and Amazon have signed a $38 billion deal that will give OpenAI access to Amazon Web Services’ (AWS) vast network of servers to support advanced generative AI workloads. The agreement goes into effect immediately, allowing OpenAI to utilize AWS services and capabilities without delay.

OpenAI announced the details of its partnership with Amazon in a press release on its website earlier this week. Through this deal, Amazon will provide OpenAI access to the AWS EC2 UltraServers, which leverage the latest GPU technology from NVIDIA. This infrastructure enables OpenAI to scale its generative AI workloads across tens of millions of CPUs, vastly expanding its compute capacity.

AWS’s cloud computing infrastructure is among the most powerful in today’s technology industry. While Microsoft competes through Azure and Google offers its own cloud services, AWS has long been the market leader. Its servers are widely used across various sectors, making any AWS malfunction a significant event in the tech world.

Despite the competitive landscape, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman expressed enthusiasm about the deal. He looks forward to the potential AWS can deliver for OpenAI’s ongoing research and development efforts, highlighting the importance of this partnership in advancing cutting-edge AI technologies.
