The dream of seeing Tobey Maguire swing back into action for *Spider-Man 4* isn’t dead yet. Mattson Tomlin, co-writer of *The Batman Part II*, has shared a cautiously optimistic update about his campaign to write the next installment in the franchise.
On X (formerly Twitter), screenwriter Mattson Tomlin responded to a fan’s question about whether his pitch for *Spider-Man 4* featuring Tobey Maguire had gained any traction. Tomlin revealed that while the situation remains complicated, the dream is far from over.
“Slow and steady wins the race. There won’t be anything to say about that for a long time (if ever!) because it involves a lot of people and politics and things going right that have nothing to do with me,” he wrote. “But I haven’t gotten a ‘no’ yet!”
Tomlin has been vocal about his desire to create a grounded continuation of Sam Raimi’s original trilogy. Earlier this year, he shared his concept for a story where Maguire’s Peter Parker balances life as both a superhero and a father.
“Spider-Man as a father is where I gravitate towards given the last 8 films,” he posted on X back in July 2025.
*Spider-Man 4* was originally slated for release in May 2011, with Sam Raimi set to return as director and Tobey Maguire reprising his iconic role. However, creative disagreements led Sony to cancel the project and reboot the franchise with *The Amazing Spider-Man* in 2012, starring Andrew Garfield.
Since then, both Raimi and Maguire have expressed openness to returning to the Spider-Man universe. Raimi told Moviepilot in 2022 that the Marvel multiverse gave him hope that anything is possible.
Maguire echoed the sentiment in *Spider-Man: No Way Home The Official Movie Special* (2023), saying, “If these guys called me and said, ‘Would you show up tonight to hang out and goof around?’ or ‘Would you show up to do this movie or read a scene or do a Spider-Man thing?’, it would be a ‘yes!’ Because why wouldn’t I want to do that?”
Fans eager to see Tobey Maguire don the suit once again may still have reason to hope, as the pieces slowly come together behind the scenes.
