Utah Mammoth Extend Winning Streak with 3-2 Victory over Winnipeg Jets
WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) — Dylan Guenther broke a tie with 5:36 left, and the Utah Mammoth won their seventh straight game, beating the Winnipeg Jets 3-2 on Sunday night. Coming off a 6-2 victory in Minnesota on Saturday, the Mammoth improved to 8-2-0 on the season.
Logan Cooley and JJ Peterka set up the winning goal, with Peterka stealing the puck from defenseman Haydn Fleury. Michael Carcone and Mikhail Sergachev also scored for Utah, while Vitek Vanecek made 28 saves.
For Winnipeg, Mark Scheifele and Dylan DeMelo scored, and Connor Hellebuyck stopped 29 shots. The Jets tied the game at 2 on the power play in the second period. With John Marino off the ice for interference, Scheifele took a pass from Josh Morrissey and fired a shot past Vanecek.
The Mammoth responded quickly, scoring twice in a 1:04 span in the second period to take a 2-1 lead. Sergachev snapped a shot past Hellebuyck with 9:57 remaining, and Carcone finished a 2-on-1 rush with Kailer Yamamoto at 8:53 to go.
Devils Shock Avalanche in Overtime, Extend Winning Streak to Eight
NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — Jack Hughes scored at 1:53 of overtime and goaltender Jake Allen made 21 saves as the New Jersey Devils slipped past the Colorado Avalanche 4-3, marking their eighth straight victory.
Hughes netted his second goal of the game and the team-best eighth of the season, propelling New Jersey on its longest winning streak since a 13-game run early in the 2022-23 season. Defenseman Simon Nemec contributed three assists for the Devils, who have won every game since their season-opening loss at Carolina.
Allen improved to 5-0-0 and has been the starting goalie since Jacob Markstrom was injured in mid-October.
Connor Brown gave New Jersey the lead at 12:51 of the second period, but Colorado’s Brock Nelson tied the game at 13:55 of the third with his second goal of the season.
Lightning Edge Golden Knights in Overtime Thriller
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Nikita Kucherov scored just 33 seconds into overtime as the Tampa Bay Lightning defeated the Vegas Golden Knights 2-1. Brandon Hagel also scored for Tampa Bay, who earned their second straight win after a slow start to the season (1-4-2).
Andrei Vasilevskiy made 18 saves to record his first win of the season in his sixth start. William Karlsson scored for Vegas, who dropped both games on their Florida road trip.
Rookie goalie Carl Lindbom stopped 26 shots in his first NHL start. Kucherov capped a 2-on-1 rush with Hagel on the opening shift of overtime, following an interception by Hagel in the defensive zone that set up the odd-man chance.
Sharks Top Wild 6-5 in Overtime After Late Surge
ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Macklin Celebrini scored an unassisted goal at 3:47 of overtime to give the San Jose Sharks a thrilling 6-5 victory over the Minnesota Wild.
Celebrini, who also contributed two assists, scooped up a loose puck in the San Jose zone after goalie Yaroslav Askarov made a save on Brock Faber, then raced in alone and beat Jesper Wallstedt.
William Eklund scored twice, while Michael Misa, Ryan Reaves, and Tyler Toffoli also found the back of the net for San Jose. Askarov finished with 28 saves.
Joel Eriksson Ek scored with 2:18 left in regulation to cap a three-goal third period for Minnesota. Kirill Kaprizov registered his third assist of the game on the goal, reaching 400 career points.
Toffoli gave the Sharks a 5-3 lead with a power-play goal 7:52 into the third period, but Zeev Buium quickly responded 36 seconds later when his shot deflected off San Jose’s Ty Dellandrea, bringing the Wild within one.
