Treasury Secretary Bessent: We Have a Deal with China

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told NBC News during an interview on Sunday’s *Meet the Press* that China was ready to make a deal after just two days of negotiations.

“President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping are expected to reach an agreement to avert a new 100% U.S. tariff on Chinese goods,” Bessent said. A framework is prepared for a meeting this week between Trump and Xi, likely on Thursday.

“I’m also anticipating some form of deferral on the rare earth export controls that China has discussed,” Bessent added. “President Trump gave me significant negotiating leverage with the threat of the 100% tariffs, and I believe we’ve reached a substantial framework that will avoid imposing those tariffs, allowing us to discuss many other critical issues with China.”

Looking ahead, President Trump is expected to visit Xi in Beijing early next year. Currently, Trump is attending the Summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in Malaysia and is likely to meet with Xi in South Korea on Thursday.

The first and foremost topic Trump plans to address is fentanyl. China maintains that the fentanyl crisis largely stems from American demand for the drug.
