Artillery debris from USMC 250th anniversary celebration damages highway patrol vehicle

CHP Border Division Chief Tony Coronado described the recent incident as a rarity. “This was an unusual and concerning situation,” Coronado said. “It is highly uncommon for any live-fire or explosive training activity to occur over an active freeway. As a Marine myself, I have tremendous respect for our military partners, but my foremost responsibility is ensuring the safety of the people of California and the officers who protect them.”

Fortunately, no injuries were reported from the falling debris. The only known damage caused by the shrapnel was to a CHP vehicle. Officers promptly notified the U.S. Marine Corps, who were on assignment at the location of the incident. Following this, the Marines canceled any additional live ordnance firing over the freeway, and the area was swept for further evaluation, according to the CHP.

The incident involving falling debris occurred just days after California Governor Gavin Newsom criticized a related celebration. Newsom called it a “vanity parade” and rebuked the Trump administration for planning to close the interstate for the festivities. On October 15, Newsom posted, “Donald Trump and JD Vance think that shutting down the I-5 to shoot out missiles from ships is how you respect the military. PUT ASIDE YOUR VANITY PARADE AND PAY OUR TROOPS INSTEAD.”

In response, the Marine Corps rejected Newsom’s claim regarding freeway closures during the anniversary celebration.

The CHP is currently evaluating the incident and preparing an internal report. They stated they would offer a recommendation to conduct an additional after-action review focusing on the planning, communication, and coordination between federal, state, and local government agencies. The goal is to ensure necessary steps are implemented to strengthen protocols for future demonstrations and training events near public roadways.
