Capcom execs took convincing to allow GOG to sell the original Resident Evil games

GOG has made a name for itself over the years as one of the bastions of game preservation in any form. While the Resident Evil games are widely available across various platforms, GOG made a dedicated effort to ensure that the original titles are playable in their authentic, unaltered forms.

Interestingly, securing the rights to offer Resident Evil, Resident Evil 2, and Resident Evil 3 on GOG’s platform was not without its challenges. Marcin Paczynski, GOG’s senior business development manager, recently spoke to The Game Business about Capcom’s initial bewilderment at the idea that there was demand for the original Resident Evil games in their classic formats.

Despite the initial hurdles, the collaboration ultimately worked out very well for GOG. The original Resident Evil games sold strongly and received exceptionally high review ratings from users. For Paczynski, this success served as a strong validation of GOG’s commitment to preserving gaming history and providing players with authentic experiences.
