Pensioner says ‘I’ve never known it so bad’ after man attacked with hammer

A man in his 50s suffered serious injuries after being struck on the head with a hammer outside a property on Underwood Road shortly before 10pm on Tuesday, September 23. He was taken to hospital for treatment following the incident.

Reacting to the news, Allan Reed, 72, who has lived in nearby Shears Road his whole life, told the Echo that the area used to be beautiful, but not anymore.

He said:
“I’ve lived in this road all my life, 72 years, and I’ve never known it as bad as it is now. It used to be a beautiful place where everyone up and down the road was an auntie or uncle, and everyone’s door was open, but it’s not like that anymore. I hope the police find whoever is responsible. I worry for the young people and future generations because nothing seems to be getting any better. I try not to worry too much at my age, but the world is very different now to what it used to be. It’s not right that somebody can attack someone on the street in the middle of the night.”

Following the incident, Hampshire Constabulary appealed to the public, asking anyone who witnessed anything related to the attack to call 101, quoting incident number 44250431626.

Speaking to the Echo, Bishopstoke ward councillor Gin Tidridge described the attack as horrific.

She said:
“I can only echo what the police say, anyone with any information about the incident should come forward. The nature of the incident, somebody being attacked with a hammer, is horrific. I hope the victim makes a full recovery and my thoughts are with them and their family. It’s just horrific that something like this can happen in Bishopstoke, so if anyone does have any information as to what happened, then please come forward.”

Hampshire police are yet to make any arrests following the incident. In response to the attack, police have increased their presence in the area as officers carry out further enquiries and provide reassurance to the community.
