**House of Guinness Stars Louis Partridge as Edward Guinness**

*House of Guinness* is a historical drama available on Netflix, created by Steven Knight, the mind behind *Peaky Blinders*. Set against the backdrop of 19th-century Ireland and New York, the series blends fictional and historical figures, following the Guinness siblings in the aftermath of their father’s death.

Louis Partridge stars as Edward Guinness, the third son of Sir Benjamin Guinness and younger brother of Arthur (played by Anthony Boyle). Speaking about his role, Partridge shared how he enjoyed portraying a character that “changes a lot throughout the show,” adding, “There’s not just one side of him, there’s a lot to show.”

He explained further:
“At the beginning, he’s very sober, serious, ambitious, strategic, and business-driven. That’s really not me at all — I’m more spontaneous, random, and creative.”

### Who Was the Real Edward Guinness?

Edward Guinness, also known as the 1st Earl of Iveagh, was the head of the family’s brewing business and a well-respected philanthropist. He is best remembered for creating affordable housing in London and Dublin through charitable trusts such as the Guinness Trust.

By the age of 29, Edward had taken over sole ownership of the Dublin brewery after buying out his older brother Arthur’s half-share. He went on to become the richest man in Ireland after floating two-thirds of the company on the London Stock Exchange in 1886 for £6 million.

Edward retired as a multi-millionaire at the age of 40. In 1902, he commissioned the iconic Guinness Storehouse, which remains one of Ireland’s top tourist attractions to this day.

Fans may be interested to know that he donated £250,000 to the Lister Institute in 1898, the first medical research charity in the UK. He also sponsored new physics and botany buildings at Trinity College Dublin.

Unlike his brother Arthur, Edward was not heavily involved in politics. His political involvement was limited to serving as High Sheriff of County Dublin in 1885. He did run for the Conservative seat of Dublin St Stephen’s Green in the 1885 general election but was unsuccessful.

### Who Did Edward Guinness Marry?

In 1873, Edward married his third cousin Adelaide Maria Guinness, known as Dodo, who was descended from the banking line of the Guinness family. Together, they had three sons: Rupert, Arthur Ernest, and Walter.

Edward Guinness passed away at the age of 79 in 1927 at Grosvenor Place in London. His estate was assessed for probate at £13.5 million, setting a British record that stood until 1933.
